hotel's clientele. Your reaction no doubt will color whether the New Garden is worth con-
sidering. Rooms, especially those in the newer building, are what you might find at any
good-quality chain motel in North America. A bar area and pool are in front. Rents scoot-
ers for US$20 per day.

( 829-342-8089; www.casaveintiuno.com ; Calle Piano 1; r incl breakfast US$175-200; ) This
whitewashed modernist home on a hill just outside town has been transformed into a com-
fortable and intimate B&B, both a quiet refuge and a base for exploring the area. The Bel-
gian owners Saskia and Mark - and their two dogs - provide personable and attentive ser-
vice, even shuttling every guest into town for a private tour. Many guests, however,
choose to spend much of their time lounging around the courtyard pool area and upstairs
lounge, which has a telescope, treadmill, Wii game system and a 'library' of DVDs, books
and boardgames. Lunch and dinner - the quality of the food is some of the best in town -
are served Wednesdays through Sundays. Nonguests can eat here, but reservations are re-
quired.

( 809-571-2220; www.terralindaresort.com ; Calle Dr Rosen 22; s/d US$90/130; ) Three
stories of well-kept and comfortable rooms with small flatscreen TVs surround Terra
Linda's large inner courtyard, which has an Olympic-sized pool - it feels like an oasis
from the noisy street. Look for the entrance below street level, concealed behind the
Scotch 'n' Sirloin restaurant.
