Diving & Snorkeling
Sosúa is generally considered the diving capital of the north coast. In addition to the
dozen or so dive sites within boating range of Sosúa Bay, dive shops also organize excur-
sions as far afield as Río San Juan (through mangroves and freshwater Dudu Cave) and
Cayo Arena. There's a good variety of fish plus hard and soft corals (several projects to
restore depleted coral are in the works), drop-offs and sponges.
Among the popular dive spots nearby are Airport Wall, featuring a wall and tunnels in
12m to 35m of water; Zíngara Wreck, an upright 45m ship sunk in 1993 as an artificial
reef in around 35m of water; and Coral Gardens and Coral Wall, both offering coral form-
ations in depths ranging from 14m to 53m.
Prices are generally US$90 for two dives with gear, around US$10 less if you have
your own equipment, and slightly more for dives further afield. Booking a dive package
brings the price down considerably - with a 10-dive package, the per-dive price can be as
low as US$35 if you have your own gear. All of Sosúa's shops offer certification courses.
Snorkeling trips are available at all shops, and cost US$30 to US$45 per person, depend-
ing on the length and number of stops; equipment is always included.
One big difference about the shops is that the predominant language among the staff is
German, though English and Spanish are spoken by all.
