Getting There & Away
Arriving in town from the direction of El Limón or Sánchez, head about 1km downhill
past the municipal market where the guagua station is, around several traffic circles and
through Pueblo Principe, a faux Caribbean village, to the main street - Av Malecón or Av
la Marina. Most of the restaurants, banks and bus stations are here.
AIR
Aeropuerto Internacional El Catey ( Click here ) , 40km west of Samaná, receives interna-
tional flights. The closest airstrip to Samaná, Aeropuerto Internacional Arroyo Barril, re-
ceives mostly domestic charter flights only.
BUS
Facing the pier, Caribe Tours ( 809-538-2229; www.caribetours.com.do ; Av Malecón 6) offers the
fastest services to Santo Domingo on the new highway leaving at 8am, 10am, 2pm and
4pm (RD$320, 2½ hours). Oddly, for the same price you can choose the slow road at 7am,
9am, 1pm and 3pm (RD$320, 4½ hours).
For direct services to Puerto Plata, 210km to the west, Santo Canario ( 829-658-3282)
minivans leave at 11am beside the Banco Popular. Papagayo ( ask for Salvador
809-749-6415) has a service at 1:30pm from under the mango tree on the eastern side of the
little park next to Banco Popular on the Malecón. If you miss him there, he waits at the
municipal market until 2pm. Both charge RD$300 and the trip takes about 3½ to four
hours. Call ahead to double-check the day's departure. Locals say the latter is a safer,
though slightly slower, ride. Arrive 30 to 45 minutes early to reserve a seat.
For service to towns nearby, head to the guagua terminal (Av Francisco de Rosario Sánchez) at
the mercado municipal, 200m west of the Politur station, near Angel Mesina street. From
here, minivans head to Las Galeras (RD$100, one hour, every 15 minutes from 6:30am to
6pm), El Limón (RD$70, 50 minutes, every 15 minutes from 6:30am to 4:45pm) and Las
Terrenas (RD$100, 1¼ hours, hourly from 6:30am to 4:45pm). Destinations further afield
also leave from the same block: Santo Domingo (RD$300, 2½ hours, every 45 minutes
