Tucked into a quiet courtyard in the narrow streets north of Sennaya pl, this friendly
little hotel is one of St Pete's best bargains. A few antiques are scattered around to
justify its 'retro' claims, but most furniture and all facilities are quite modern, with a
kitchen for guest use as well as a washing machine. To access the hotel (which clearly
has something against signage), ring 88 at the Grazhdanskaya ul 16 entry phone (even
though the official street address is different) and then go up to flat 14 on the 2nd
floor.

Pushkin's family once rented rooms in this house and the great
writer even wrote a short story called
The Little House in Kolomna
. The associations
with Pushkin end there, though, as the interior and atmosphere evoke a Russian flat
from the 1970s, complete with brown furnishings and lots of plants. You're a bit out
of the way here, but at these prices it's a good deal. The hotel is totally unsigned - go
into the courtyard behind house 174A and ring the unmarked bell on your left.

Back in the day, Communist party apparatchiks
used to stay here when they came to visit Leningrad. These days, budget travellers
can enjoy the same Soviet service and style, and the amount of English spoken re-
mains almost nil. Don't expect anything like a traditional hostel, but rooms are clean
and have private facilities. It's handy for the metro, even if the immediate area isn't
particularly beautiful.
