While the new chains of private fitness centres
cater to St Petersburg's wealthy classes, most people with athletic tendencies spend
time at places such as this sports complex, which is the Russian version of the
YMCA. It's not as shiny and new as the private clubs, but the 25m swimming pool
under a glass roof is heavenly. Other facilities include weights, aerobics classes and
clubs for every sport imaginable.

This car-free island becomes a winter wonderland in
colder temperatures, with sledding, cross-country skiing and ice skating. Skis and
skates are both available for hire. In summer months, it's a great place to rent in-line
on the island.

Petrovsky Island (a small island on the Petrograd Side). Tickets can usually be pur-
chased at designated ticket outlets or at the stadium - check the website for the sched-
ule or look for posters plastered around town.

7000-seat stadium is home to the local basketball team, Spartak, who play here from
October to April, but it also houses an
ice rink
