In-Depth Information
PYI Guesthouse Phaung Daw Pyan Rd 081 209076, pyi.nsmm@gmail.com . An odd
complex of newish, red-brick houses, whose interiors are rendered almost suite-like on ac-
count of the separated bathroom and toilet areas. While they're comfy e nou gh, it has to be
said that the bedding isn't as good as one would expect at this price level. $65
QueenInn WinQuarter 081209544, queeninle@gmail.com . Thisneatlittleguesthouse
boasts a nice location on the opposite side of the canal, and the noise that such proximity to
said waterway brings. Management is friendly, the rooms are quite large for the price (if a
little bare) and t he n earby area is splendidly rural. A new wing was under construction at the
time of writing. $35
Remember Inn Museum Rd 081 209257, rememberinn.jimdo.com . Out near the mu-
seum, this is an enduringly popular budget choice; even the cheapest rooms get the job done,
though the bathrooms c ould use a little love. Despite its size, the place does often fill up, so
it's wise to book ahead. $25
Viewpoint Taik Nan Bridge 081 209062, inleviewpoint.com . The most luxurious
place in town by far, its superb rooms boasting all sorts of frills: think yellow thanaka face-
paintinthebathrooms;naturalshampoo,soapandexfoliants; andrice-strawinsulationinthe
walls. Do try to look at a few, however, as some have better views than others. One negative
point, for some, is the noise emitted from the hundre ds of boats which zip by during the day
- for others, it can sound quite pleasant after a while. $105 , suites $190
EATING
From humble beginnings, Nyaungshwe is now up there with the best places to eat in all My-
anmar, and international treats such as Thai curries, freshly made pasta, delectable dim sum
or locally influenced tapas make it mouthwateringly tempting to let your tastebuds take a
break from curries, rice and noodles. At the other end of the scale, the town's night market
is a grand place to eat; while it would be unfair to single out any particular stall for atten-
tion, you'll easily find good places for chapati and curry, barbecued chicken sticks and Shan
noodles. The fun starts just after sundown.
EverGreen CnrYoneGyiRd&KyaungTawShaytRd 09448016338. Tinyplaceselling
decent Shan coffee and a range of juices (almost all K1500). Also notable for their surpris-
ingly yummy fish and chips (K4000), made with fish from the lake. Daily 8am-10pm.
The French Touch Kyaung Taw Shayt Rd 094 936 0030. An artsy, loungey place that
doubles as a gallery of sorts. It's a great place for breakfast (sets K7000), or a quick coffee
and pain au chocolat, though there are plenty of decent choices on the menu. Also makes a
good drinking spot. Daily 7am-10pm.
Golden Kite Yone Gyi Rd 081 209327. Still the best of the town's ever-increasing array
of faux-Italian eateries. Plus points here are that they have a real wood oven for the pizzas
