MODERATE
Mañana Garage LATIN AMERICAN Kids will be enthralled
with the industrial motif: table bases like hubcaps, a vertical garage door as a
divider for private parties, blown-glass chandeliers, and gleaming chrome and
cobalt walls with orange accents. And the entire family will be happy with the
brilliantly conceived and executed menu. The “big person's” menu has fried
green tomatoes done just right and served with slivered red onions. The ceviche
perfectly balances flavors and textures: lime, cilantro, chile, coconut, and fresh
fish. Arepas (cornmeal and cheese griddle cakes with smoked salmon and wasabi
sour cream) meld the flavors and textures of many traditions. The menu for los
niños (10 and under) is under $5. If you are on this side of the island, don't miss
this incredible experience.

INEXPENSIVE
AK's Café HEALTHY PLATE LUNCHES Need to feed the kids
in a hurry? Chef Elaine Rothermel has a winner with this tiny cafe in the indus-
trial district of Wailuku. It may be slightly off the tourist path, but it's well worth
the effort to find this delicious eatery, with healthy creative cuisine coming out
of the kitchen. Prices are so eye-poppingly low, you might find yourself wan-
dering back here during your vacation. Lunches feature everything from grilled
chicken, garlic-crusted ono, and eggplant Parmesan to hamburger steak, beef
stew, and spaghetti with meatballs. Dinner shines, with blackened ono with
mango basil sauce, tofu napoleon with ginger pesto, crab cakes with papaya
beurre blanc, cashew chicken, baby back ribs and, of course, the special of the
day. The keiki menu has the old standby, mac and cheese, as well as a turkey
burger, and all the kids' dishes come with a side dish of vegetables or french fries.
1237 Lower Main St., Wailuku. & 808/244-8774. www.akscafe.com. Kids' menu, boosters, crayons. Plate

Down to Earth ORGANIC HEALTH FOOD Here's the place for fast
food (a buffet) with healthful organic ingredients (90% vegan) that's quicker
than McDonald's. It offers scrumptious salads, vegetarian lasagna, chili, curries,
and dozens of tasty dishes, presented at hot and cold serve-yourself stations. The
younger crowd loves the mock (tofu) chicken and the teriyaki tofu. Eat in or
take out; the food is great: everything organic and tasty, with herb-tamari mari-
nades and pleasing condiments such as currants or raisins, apples, and cashews.
Because the food is sold by the pound, you can buy a hearty, wholesome plate
for $7. Check out the (healthy and tasty) bakery selections.
305 Dairy Rd., Kahului. & 808/877-2661. Highchairs. Average $6-$8 for a plate. AE, MC, V. Mon-Sat
