Maui Hill If you can't decide between the privacy of a condo and the con-
veniences of a hotel, try this place. Managed by the respected Aston chain, Maui
Hill gives you the best of both worlds, combining all the amenities and activi-
ties of a hotel—pool, hot tub, tennis courts, Hawaiiana classes, maid service,
and more—with large luxury condos that have full kitchens and plenty of pri-
vacy. Nearly all units have ocean views, dishwashers, washer/dryers, queen sofa
beds, and big lanais. Beaches, restaurants, and oceanside parks are nearby.
(Walking up and down the hill may be a bit more exercise than you had in mind
during this vacation.)
When you check in, your kids (12 and under) get the “ASTONishing Kids
Stay, Play & Eat FREE” card which provides free activities (Maui Ocean Cen-
ter), meals (Pizza Hut, KFC, and Sizzler), and merchandise (Hilo Hattie stores).
The kids (and you) can chow down at the complimentary continental breakfast
served daily. If it's raining, ask for games or PG-rated movies you can take back
to your units.

Koa Resort If you didn't think you could afford a condominium on Maui,
think again: These older but well-maintained one-, two- and three-bedroom
units offer real value for families. Located just across the street from the ocean,
Koa Resort consists of five two-story wooden buildings on more than 5 1 2 acres
of landscaped grounds. The spacious, privately owned units are decorated with
care and come fully equipped, right down to the dishwasher and disposal in the
kitchens. The larger condos have both showers and tubs; the smaller units have
showers only. (If your kids need a tub, be sure to inquire.) All feature large lanais,
ceiling fans, and washer/dryers. For maximum peace and quiet, ask for a unit far
from Kihei Road. Bars, restaurants, and beach parks with playgrounds are
within a 5-minute drive.

Maui Coast Hotel This place stands out as one of the only moderately
priced hotels in Kihei (which is largely full of affordable condo complexes rather
than traditional hotels or resorts). That's big news—especially on Maui, where
luxury abounds. Ask about the room/car packages: For the price of a room (or
a one- or two-bedroom), the Maui Coast's Extra Value package gives you a rental
car for just a few dollars more. For other savings, I recommend that a family of
four go with either a one-bedroom suite (545 sq. ft. and starting at $255 a night)
or a junior suite (a large studio with an alcove, 519 sq. ft., starting at $215). The
standard rooms come with a king bed and a pullout sofa or two double beds (but
you would be hard pressed to squeeze in a crib, let alone a rollaway bed). The
other chief advantage of this hotel is its location, about a block from Kamaole
