Residential Study Visit in
Travel and Tourism
INTRODUCTION TO THE UNIT
A study visit i s often the highlight of any course of study, but much more so with a travel and tourism course
which is so co n c e rned with learning about travel arrangements and tourist destinations. A study visit brings
to life many of th e subjects you have been studying on your course and gives you the opportunity of learning
new work-related skills. There's also the chance to have some fun! The visit gives you the opportunity of
experiencing fi rst- ha nd the range of travel and tourism products provided by a destination, as well as
promoting independ e nt living and developing team building.
This unit is based around p lanning, organising and taking part in a residential study visit in the UK or overseas.
You will consider the aims and objectives of the study visit, and prepare a proposal for a visit, describing the
features and benefi ts of a de s tination. You will be introduced to the importance of health, safety and security
on study visits and will learn a bout risk assessments. You will be given the chance to participate positively in
the study visit and carry out a n evaluation of your own contribution to its success.
WHAT YOU WILL STUDY
When you have completed this unit you should:

Be able to produce a suitable proposal for a residential study visit;
2.
Know the reasons for, and the process of, ris k assessment;
3.
Be able to contribute to a successful residential study visit.

ASSESSMENT FOR THIS UNIT
This unit is internally assessed, meaning that you will be given an assignment (or series of assignments) to
complete by your tutor(s) to show that you have fully understood the content of t h e unit. A grading scale of
pass, merit or distinction is used when staff mark your assignment(s), with higher grades awarded to students
who show greater depth in analysis, evaluation and justifi cation in their assignments. An assignment for this
