Campaigning
Tourism Concern h a s been campaigning on human rights and ethical tourism since it was established in
1989. It sees its work in public campaigning as essential to achieving its objectives, not least because public
opinion matters increasingly to the well-being of private companies. One of its main campaigns has been
to highlight how people los e their homes and livelihoods through the development of tourism, e.g. the
displacement of the Maasai pe o ple in East Africa, and the poor working conditions of many tourism staff,
e.g. the porters who accompany t rekkers in many of the world's popular mountain tourist destinations.
Fair trade in tourism
Tourism Concern works with the travel indust r y to make things fairer for people living in destinations, but
is also keen to show that every holidaymaker ca n play their part in helping achieve fair trade in tourism. It
believes that fair trade in tourism could be the w ay forward and that fair trade will help defi ne a new way
of managing tourism which shares its benefi ts mor e equitably between tourists, the tourism industry, the
governments of the countries visited and, above all, t h e people who live in the tourist destinations. Tourism
Concern has created a Fair Trade in Tourism Network to e xplore solutions and communicate them worldwide
so that communities involved in tourism development ca n learn from each other.
