In-Depth Information
venues are often clustered in specifi c areas, for example
Broadway in New York with its many theatres offering
world-class shows and entertainment.
It is a feature of modern tourism development that
people who live in cool, temperate countries tend to
favour areas with warmer climates for their holidays.
This is one of the main reasons for the growth in
popularity of long-haul destinations in recent years.
Seasonal variations in the weather in destinations have
direct impacts on travel and tourism. Many tourist
resorts around the world have a busy peak season
when the weather is warm and sunny. Some tourism
businesses close altogether in the winter, but the rise in
popularity of activity holidays and short breaks, which
are not so weather-dependent, has made tourism a
year-round activity in a growing number of long-haul
destinations. The peak season for ski resorts is, of
course, in the winter when snow is abundant, although
many mountain resorts are now very busy all year
round, with activities such as walking, mountain-biking
and canoeing taking place in the summer months, e.g.
Whistler in British Columbia, Canada.
Food and drink
What we eat and drink while on holiday plays an
important part in our enjoyment while abroad. Certain
long-haul destinations are famous for their food and
drink - seafood in Japan, hot spicy food in India,
hamburgers in the USA, lamb in New Zealand, wine
in California, etc. Long-haul destinations that attract
visitors from all over the world must offer a variety of
food and drink options to satisfy a range of different
tastes. Increasing numbers of tourists are looking for
locally-produced food and drink while on holiday to
enhance their overall holiday experience.
Climate
Activity 8.9
Climate is arguably the single most important factor
that affects the appeal of tourist destinations. There
are a number of factors that affect an area's climate,
including:
Describe the features and facilities that contribute to
the appeal of Sydney, Australia for different types of
visitors from the UK.
Latitude - temperature decreases as you move

further north and south of the equator;
Altitude - temperatures decrease with height;
Activity 8.10
Wind - winds originating from warm areas will raise
temperatures and vice versa;
Select a long-haul destination in Africa and describe
the features and facilities that contribute to its appeal
for different types of visitors from the UK. Assess
the signifi cance of the key features and facilities that
infl uence the appeal of your chosen destination.
Distance from the sea - land heats up and cools
down faster than the sea, hence coastal areas have
a lower temperature range than inland areas;
Aspect - in the northern hemisphere, south-facing
slopes are usually the warmest as they have most
exposure to the sun. The opposite applies in the
southern hemisphere, i.e. north-facing slopes are
generally the warmest.
