for employment in the travel and
tourism sector
SECTION 3
We have seen that there are many career opportunities
in the travel and tourism sector, but getting the job that
you really want often involves a lot of hard work and
prior planning. You will be in direct competition with
other applicants when going for jobs (or when applying
for higher education courses), so it's important t o be
focused about your future aims.
Activity 6.9
Working with a partner, draw up a chart of all the
skills listed above (22 in total), plus any others that
you think are particularly important to you. Rate on a
scale of 1-10 along the top of your chart (with 1 being
the lowest and 10 the highest) where you consider
you fall on the scale at the moment for each of the
skills listed. Ask your partner for his or her views on
how you have rated yourself - then give your views
on what they have written.
Personal skills audit
You may not think so, but y o u already have a lot
of personal skills, attributes, experiences and
achievements that will stand you in good stead for your
future career. Years of studying in school and college,
doing a part-time job or voluntary work, making visits in
the UK and a broad, taking part in group activities and
organisin g events are all excellent ways of developing
yourself . Young people often underestimate their own
w o rth and sometimes need to be reminded about just
h ow much they have achieved!
