FOCUS ON INDUSTRY
The rapid growth in international tourism in the last
50 years has been closely linked to the growth in air
travel. Advances in aircraft technology have meant that
planes can now carry more passengers and fl y greater
distances. Deregulation of air travel has increased
competition between airlines and helped to keep fares
low on an expanding network of routes. Britain has a
number of world-class airlines, such as British Airways,
easyJet and Virgin Atlantic. The growth in air travel has
led to a rapid expansion of the associated infrastructure
needed to cope with business and leisure tourists, such
as airport terminals, runways, access roads and parking
facilities. This often leads to opposition by local people
who are most affected by increased noise and other
environmental impacts.
