Dif ering motivations
Activity 3.7
Different types of tourists have different motivations
for taking trips in the UK. Business travellers often
have specifi c needs, for example express check-in and
check-out at hotels, and access to business facilities
in airport lounges. A young person visiting the UK on
an Inter-Rail Pass will have very different needs, for
example budget accommodation, good-value places
to eat and cheap entertainment. UK destinations that
have invested in new facilities for visitors have seen
their visitor numbers increase and tourist economies
grow. Seaside resorts such as Brighton, Scarborough
and Bournemouth have successfully diversifi ed into
business tourism by developing conference facilities
and associated accommodation. Wet-weather facilities,
such as undercover swimming and leisure domes,
extend the tourist season and are not affected by
poor weather conditions, for example at Center Parcs
villages.
Using appropriate reference sources, carry out some
research into the needs of one type of domestic
tourist (e.g. families, business tourists) and incoming
visitors from one named overseas country. Using the
information you fi nd, analyse how one specifi c UK
destination meets the needs of your chosen type of
domestic tourist and the incoming visitors.
This activity is designed to provide evidence for P2 and
M1.
