Help with expenses
While giving your time for free is part of the definition of volunteering, financial help is
often available and organisations shouldn't leave you out of pocket. Many charities will re-
imburse your expenses such as travel tickets and lunch costs.
For some long term volunteering placements, different rules apply and as well as having
your basic expenses covered, you may be given a 'subsistence allowance' to cover living
costs like heat, light, laundry and food. You may also be given free accommodation - for
example if you are volunteering for several months in a care home.
If you are interested in volunteering with an organisation, ask whether they cover volunteer
expenses and find out what they will reimburse.
In the directory we list the contact details of a number of charities and organisations that
are grateful for volunteers. If you can't find anything that interests you there, then there are
a number of organisations that place people with other charities or that have a wide nation-
al network of their own - an internet search should give you a good list.
