Seasonal work in Australia and New Zealand
Periods of working and travelling in Australia and New Zealand are a very popular option
and you can do everything from fruit picking to helping Amnesty International. However,
you don't have to stick to the traditional backpacker temporary work - fruit picking, bar
work or call centres. If you have a trade, IT skills or a nursing qualification they're also good
for finding work.
Australia has a well worked-out system to allow you to work and travel. It's called the work-
ing holiday visa. You can qualify for any specified work and UK passport holders can apply
online. Specified work is work, whether paid or unpaid, in certain specified industries or

The main points are:
You must be between 18 and 30.
It costs around £90 (AU$195). The charge is non-refundable.
You will also be required to have a health certificate before you apply for your visa.
What you can do:
Enter Australia within 12 months of the visa being issued.
Stay up to 12 months.
Leave and re-enter Australia any number of times while the visa is valid.
Work in Australia for up to six months with each employer.
Study or train for up to four months.
