Successful applicants should allow about three weeks to find work, although it may well
come quicker than that. The average rate of pay for temporary staff us at about A$15 to
A$21 an hour, enabling a good standard of living that can help fund travels.
Joanna Burnet, of Visitoz, told us: “Our participants go to the job of their choice on their
ninth day in Australia. Those searching for work in the cities should allow four-to-six
weeks to find a job; those looking for fruit picking work should allow longer than that. The
Award (union wage) is $16 per hour and tax is 32.5% - do not expect more than that to start
with. There is high youth unemployment in the cities and on the coast.”
New Zealand has a similar working visa scheme for either 12 or 23 months - and also a
health certificate requirement. To qualify you must:
1.
Usually be permanently living in the United Kingdom - this means you can be
temporarily visiting another country when you lodge your application.
2.
Have a British passport that's valid for at least three months after your planned de-
parture from NZ.
3.
Be at least 18 and not more than 30 years old.
4.
Not bring children with you.
5.
Hold a return ticket, or sufficient funds to purchase such a ticket.
6.
Have a minimum of NZ$350 per month of stay in available funds (to meet your
living costs while you're there).
7.
Meet NZ's health and character requirements.
8.
Satisfy the authorities that your main reason for going to NZ is to holiday, not
work.
9.
Not have been approved a visa permit under a Working Holiday Scheme before.
