Trains
Travelling by train is one of the best ways to see a country - and if you travel on an overnight
sleeper it can be as quick as a plane. India's train network is world-famous and an absolute
must experience! But don't think you can't use trains in other parts of the world. What fol-
lows is just a taster.
Inter-railing - Europe and a bit beyond
If you want to visit a lot of countries, one of the best ways to travel is by train on an InterRail
ticket. With InterRail you have the freedom of the rail networks of Europe (and a bit bey-
ond), allowing you to go as you please in 28 countries.
From the northern lights of Sweden to the kasbahs of Morocco, you can call at all the stops.
InterRail takes you from city centre to city centre - avoiding airport hassles, ticket queues
and traffic jams, and giving you more time to make the most of your visit. Passes are avail-
able for all ages, but you need to have lived in Europe for at least six months.
Overnight trains are available on most of the major routes, saving on accommodation costs,
allowing you to go to sleep in one country and wake up in another.
The InterRail ticket also includes some ferry crossings as a deck passenger, You may be trav-
elling outside on the top deck in open air but at least it's covered in your ticket and will be
no extra costs. For example, you can choose an overnight ferry crossing from Italy to main
land Greece via lots of Greek islands for a spot of island-hopping on your ticket. You can
also purchase a Thomas Cook InterRail timetable book republished every year to help plan
your inter rail trip: www.europeanrailtimetable.eu
Supplements apply so ask when you book. You will have to pay extra to travel on some ex-
press intercity trains or the Eurostar. Most major stations such as Paris, Brussels, Amsterdam
and Rome have washing facilities and left luggage.
The InterRail One Country Pass can be used for the following countries:
Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany,
Great Britain, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Luxembourg, Macedonia (FYR), Netherlands, Nor-
way, Poland, Portugal, Republic of Ireland, Romania, Russia, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia,
Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and Turkey.
The alternative choice is the InterRail Global Pass, which is valid in all participating Inter-
Rail countries. Available for several lengths of travel, it is ideal for gappers wanting to ex-
plore several, or even all, European countries in their year out.
