In-Depth Information
Second class prices vary by the country and range from £32 (under 26)/£51 (over 26) for
three days in one month, to £74/£116 for eight days in one month in Bulgaria; to £181/£289
in France.
Belgium, The Netherlands and Luxembourg are combined as the InterRail Benelux Pass.
For Greece you have the option to order a Greece Plus Pass, which includes ferry crossings
to and from Italy.
Global Pass
For second class travel, over 22 continuous days, prices range from £288 (under 26) to
£432 (over 26) and are valid from five days to one month. For further details on prices and
how to buy an InterRail pass, visit their website: www.interrail.eu .
Eurostar
The Eurostar train is a quick, easy and relatively cheap way to get to Europe. You can get
from London to Calais from £69, and the trains are comfortable and run frequently. Tick-
ets can be purchased online at www.eurostar.com , in an approved travel agency, or at any
Eurostar train station.
Trans-Siberian Express
If you're looking for a train adventure - and you have a generous budget to play with -
what about the Trans-Siberian Express? You could do a 14-day Moscow-Beijing trip. Do
this as a 'full-on' or a 'no-frills' package.
You can also choose from a range of other trips lasting from nine to 26 days. On top of this
you will need some money for food and drink, visas, airfare etc .
For China, Russia and Mongolia you'll need to have a visa for your passport to allow you
into each country. Contact each relevant embassy to find out what type of visa you will
need ( ie visitors or transit). It's probably easiest to arrange for all your train tickets, visas
and hotel accommodation through a specialist agency, about six months before you leave.
Your journey will be a lot easier if you have all your paperwork in order before you leave
- although it will cost you more to do it this way.
The trains can be pretty basic, varying according to which line you're travelling on and
which country owns the train. On some trains you can opt to upgrade to first class. This
should give you your own cabin with shower, wash basin and more comfort - however, al-
though you'll be more comfortable, you may find it more interesting back in second class
with all the other backpackers and traders.
