The Dápia
Behind the hospital in a small park is a diminutive, signposted fort, the Dápia , built by
the Russian Orloff brothers during their abortive 1770 invasion. The fort failed
spectacularly in its avowed purpose to besiege and bombard the main castle, as did the
entire rebellion, and Ottoman reprisals on the island were severe.
Archeological museum
Tues-Sun 8.30am-3pm • €2 • T 22540 22900
he archeological museum occupies the former Ottoman governor's mansion right
behind Romeïkós Yialós, not far from the site of Bronze Age Mýrina . Finds from all of
the island's major sites are assiduously labelled in Greek, Italian and English, and the
entire premises is exemplary in terms of presentation. The star upper-storey exhibits are
votive lamps in the shape of sirens, found in an Archaic sanctuary at Hephaestia
(Ifestía), much imitated in modern local jewellery. There are also numerous
representations of the goddess Cybele/Artemis, who was revered across the island; her
shrines were typically situated near a fauna-rich river mouth - on Límnos at Avlónas,
now inside the grounds of the Porto Myrina resort. An entire room is devoted to
metalwork, featuring impressive gold jewellery and bronze objects, both practical (cheese
graters, door-knockers) and whimsical-naturalistic (a snail, a vulture).
Town beaches
As town beaches go, Romeïkós Yialós and Néa Mádhitos (ex-Toúrkikos Yialós), its
counterpart to the southeast of the harbour, are not bad. Rihá Nerá , the next bay north
of Romeïkós Yialós, is even better - shallow as the name suggests and well attended by
families, with watersports on offer.
