GETTING AROUND
By bus Buses are fairly infrequent on Límnos, with only
afternoon departures from Mýrina to many of the more
distant villages and only 1-2 daily to those nearer the capital.
By motorbike A vehicle is required for touring; a
motorbike is quite sufficient for the more touristed western
third of the island, which is a blessing as cars are expensive.
Mýrina
MÝRINA (aka Kástro), the port-capital on the west coast, has the ethos of a provincial
market town rather than of a resort. With about five thousand inhabitants, it's
pleasantly low-key, if not especially picturesque, apart from a core neighbourhood of
old stone houses dating from the Ottoman era, and the ornate Neoclassical mansions
backing Romeïkós Yialós , the town's beach-lined esplanade. Shops and amenities are
mostly found along Kydhá and its continuation Karatzá - which meanders north from
the harbour to Romeïkós Yialós - or Garoufalídhi, its perpendicular offshoot, roughly
halfway along.
Mýrina castle
Unrestricted access
Mýrina's main attraction is its Byzantine castle , perched on a craggy headland between
the ferry dock and Romeïkós Yialós. Ruinous despite later Genoese and Ottoman
additions, the fortress is flatteringly lit at night and warrants a climb towards sunset for
views over the town, the entire west coast and - in clear conditions - Mount Áthos, 35
nautical miles west. Skittish miniature deer, imported from Rhodes and fed by the
municipality, patrol the castle grounds to the amusement of visitors.
