By car or motorbike Parking in town is possible only on
the southern fringes and in the moat west of the kástro.

The most reliable internet café is Enter, just seaward of the
Fedra Hotel . The post office is on Omírou.
ACCOMMODATION
Híos Town has a fair quantity of affordable accommodation, rarely full. Most places line the front or the perpendicular alleys
and parallel streets behind, and almost all are plagued by traffic noise - we've listed the more peaceful establishments.

W chiosrooms.gr. Don and Dina's lovingly restored tile- or
wood-floored, high-ceilinged rooms are relatively quiet for
a seafront location. Some en su ite; best is the penthouse
“suite” with private terrace. €25
Fedra Mihaïl Livanoú 13 T 22710 41129. Well-appointed
pension in a nineteenth-century mansion, with stone arches
in the downstairs winter bar; in summer the bar oper ates
outside, so get a rear room to avoid nocturnal noise. €35
Grecian Castle Bélla Vísta shore avenue T 22710
44740, W greciancastle.gr. Converted factory towards the
airport with lovely grounds and a sea-view pool, but the
smallish main-wing rooms, despite their marble floors,
wood ceilings and bug scre ens, a re inferior to the rear “villa”
suites. Breakfast included. €100
Ì Kyma Evyenías Handhrí T 22710 44500, E kyma
@chi.forthnet.gr. Variable rooms in a Neoclassical
mansion or modern extension, with huge terraces on the
sea-facing side; most units have new handmade wood-
and-leather furniture. Owner Theo's knowle dge able service
really makes the place. Breakfast included. €65
EATING AND DRINKING
Ì O Hotzas Yeoryíou Kondhýli 3 T 22710 42787.
Oldest and most popular taverna in town, with an old-style
interior and delightful summer garden. Menu varies
seasonally, but expect a mix of vegetarian dishes and
lahanodolmádhes , sausages, baby fish and mydhopílafo
(rice and mussels) accompanied by own-brand ouzo or
retsina. Mon-Sat 7pm-late.
Ta Mylarakia Tambákika district T 22710 40412. A
large seafood selection, every kind of Hiot ouzo (Tetteri
Penindari is the best) and limited seating at the
island's most romantic waterside setting at the four
restored windmills. Reservations advisable in summer.
Daily April-Oct 11am-2am Nov-May 8pm-1am.
Tassos Stávrou Livanoú 8, Bélla Vísta district. Good all-
rounder with creative salads, better-than-average bean
dishes, dolmádhes , snails, good chips, a strong line in seafood
and decent barrelled wine. There's sea-view summer garden
seating and a heated gazebo for winter. Daily noon-1am.
Theodhosiou Neoríon 33. The oldest of three ouzerís
on this quay, occupying a domed, arcaded building.
There's a fair range of meat grills for this type of place,
plus various seafood standards. Generally, avoid the
fried platters in favour of grilled or boiled ones. Dinner
only; closed Sun.
NIGHTLIFE AND ENTERTAINMENT
Some 1400 local university students help keep things lively, especially along the waterfront between the two “kinks” in
Egéou. Shooting pool is big here; many bars have several tables. Film fans are well served by Cine Kipos (late June to early
Sept), in one corner of the central park, with quality/art-house first-run screenings; from October the action shifts to Cine
Diana, under the eponymous hotel.
Bowling Club Leofóros Egéou 120 T 22710 28517. This
popular bar has a multitude of pool tables and seven
bowling alleys as well. Daily 10am-late.
Homerion Cultural Centre Iroón Polytekhníou 5
T 22710 44391, W homerion.gr. This large events hall on
the south side of the park hosts changing exhibitions, and
big-name acts, including some foreign ones, often come
here after Athens concerts. Hours vary.

Mastiha Shop Egéou 36 T 22710 81600,
W mastihashop.com. Home base of a chain with nine
branches in Greece plus others in New York, Paris and even
Jeddah. Sells all things mastic from chewing gum to
shower gel. Daily: July-Sept 8.30am-midnight; Oct-
June 8.30am-10pm.
