Mining Museum of Mílos
Daily 9am-2pm & 5.30-9.30pm • €3 • W milosminingmuseum.gr
On the seafront east of town, about 500m from the centre, the well-organized Mining
Museum of Mílos gives an interesting insight into how mining has shaped the island,
with an extensive collection of mining equipment, mineral samples and geological
maps of Mílos, plus informative displays on the extraction, processing and uses of
minerals. The museum is well worth a visit at the start of your stay in order to make
more sense of the island's appearance and economy. Don't miss the two moving short
films where old miners describe their working conditions (English subtitles).

Pláka and around
PLÁKA , the capital of the island, is the largest of a cluster of traditional villages that
huddle beneath a small crag on the road northwest of Adhámas. Steps beginning
near the Fóras taverna lead up to the kástro , its upper slopes clad in stone and
cement to channel precious rainwater into cisterns. The Folk Museum (Tues-Sat
10am-2pm & 6-9pm, Sun 10am-2pm; €3) has a well-presented array of artefacts
related to the history of arts, crafts and daily life on Mílos. The small church of the
Dormition nearby offers one of the best views in the Aegean, particularly at sunset.
On a long ridge 1km south of Pláka, the narrow, attractive village of Trypití
(“perforated”), which takes its name from the cliffside catacombs nearby, is less busy
with traffic than lower Pláka. At the very bottom of the cliff edge and accessed via a
road from the southern end of Trypití or steps down from the catacombs, Klíma is the
most photogenic of the island's fishing hamlets, with its picturesque boathouses tucked
underneath the colourful village dwellings.
