EATING, DRINKING AND NIGHTLIFE
Quattro T 22970 91447. Beachside café/bar that trumps
its neighbours by offering not just free wi-fi, but a laptop
brought to your table. Open all day for breakfast, coffee and
cocktails, plus good, chilled out sounds at night. Daily
10am-late.
Saronis T 22970 91394. Blue-and-white checked
tablecloths lend a relaxed feel to this long-established
restaurant beside the church, with a more interesting and
authentic menu than many here; stuffed mushrooms,
horta and saganaki feature, as well as fresh fish, prawns
and octopus. Daily lunch & dinner.
Taboo Main road on the western edge of town T 22970
91181. The one real club on the island, which can be
packed, sweaty and thumping or can be deserted,
5
depending on the visiting crowds - watch out for posters
advertising special events like beach parties and funk and
soul nights. Summer Fri-Sun from 11pm, plus special
events year-round.
Taverna Parnassos Metóhi T 22970 91539. The roof
terrace here, close to the village's highest point, has
perhaps the best views on the whole island, and there's
excellent, home-cooked traditional food to appreciate
while you enjoy them. Daily lunch & dinner.
To Kyma T 22970 91622. Behind the beach in the midst
of the beachfront cafés, To Kyma has a charcoal grill out
front where kebabs and squid are grilled, plus a good,
traditional Greek menu with plenty of vegetable dishes.
Daily lunch & dinner.
Mýlos (Megalohóri)
The least attractive aspect of Angístri is the windblown road along the coast between
Skála and MÝLOS . Mýlos itself has an attractive, traditional village centre with a
church and platía, but there's only a tiny beach, so relatively few people stay here.
Access to the rest of the island is easy, however, and there are plenty of rooms and
tavernas.
ACCOMMODATION AND EATING
MÝLOS
Fotis T 22970 91325. This year-round taverna on the
main street in the village centre is also the local butcher, so
the meat here is particularly good. It's worth checking out
the day's specials in the kitchen - they're often absolutely
delicious. Daily lunch & dinner.
Kouros Café with a lovely position looking out over the
goings-on of the harbour; breakfast, ice cream and waffles
served as well as full meals, and there's free wi-fi. Daily
10am-10pm.
Meltemi Studios T 22970 91057, W meltemistudios
.gr. Purpose-built studios in a prime position with views
back along the coast towards Skála as well as over the
harbour. Rooms are clean and cheerful, and there's a tin y
deep pool that operates as a pool bar in high season. €50
Rest of the island
There's basically just one road on Angístri, running from Skála and Mýlos round the
west coast to the bottom of the island. Midway around, Dhragonéra is a beautiful but
rocky pine-fringed beach with a dramatic panorama across to the mainland; other
small coves are accessible across the rocks. Despite the warning signs, many people
camp in the woods around these beaches. LIMENÁRIA , a small farming community at
the edge of a fertile plateau in the southern corner of the island, is largely unaffected by
tourism. The closest swimming is a few hundred metres east down a cement drive, then
steps, at Máriza , where a diminutive concrete lido gives access to deep, ice-clear water.
The little anchorage of Apónissos lies 2km west, past a shallow salt marsh; there's lovely
swimming here in a tiny, warm lagoon, idyllic when uncrowded, or off the rocks in
deeper, cooler water.
EATING AND DRINKING
REST OF THE ISLAND
Aponisos Taverna Apónissos. A matchless beachside
setting for this simple ouzerí , whose wooden chairs are
set on a terrace above the water. Simple meze dishes
are the order of the day. June-Sept lunch & dinner
daily.
O Tasos Limenária T 22970 91362. Hugely popular with
visiting mainlanders - and hence packed at weekend
lunchtimes - O Tasos produces traditional cooking using
local produce. Pricier than you'd expect for the location.
Daily lunch & dinner.
