pedal power - albeit with a couple of steep climbs.
On foot The island is small enough to cross on foot, via
Metóhi along a winding dirt track through the pines.
By water-taxi Water-taxis ( T 697 76 18 040; about €30
per boat from Skála to Dhragonéra, for example) serve the
beaches and Égina.
Skála and around
SKÁLA is Angístri's main tourist centre, its sandy beach backed by a straggle of modern
development. Thanks to the weekending Athenian youth, there are lively bars and cafés
here, and an unexpectedly busy nightlife; in summer, there's even an open-air cinema.
The beach, and most of the new development, lies to the right (west) from the jetty,
beyond the big church, but there are some far more attractive places to stay, looking
out over a rocky coastline, if you turn left.
From the paved road's end in this direction, beyond the Alkyoni Hotel , a path leads
along the clifftop to secluded Halikiádha . This pebble beach, backed by crumbling
cliffs, is predominantly nudist; at busy weekends there may be crowds of young Greeks
camping nearby, the rest of the time it's almost deserted. The scary scramble down is
rewarded by the island's best swimming in crystalline water. On the main town beach,
you can rent sun-loungers, pedaloes and kayaks.
METÓHI , the hillside hamlet just above Skála, was once the island's main village, but
now consists chiefly of holiday homes. If you can face the steep climb there are
wonderful views out towards Égina.
