Greek music most evenings and Sunday lunchtime. Mon-

Kuzina Adhrianoú 9 T 210 324 0133; map p.66. Far
more adventurous than the average Greek taverna, Kuzina's
fusion cooking sets it well apart from its many neighbouring
rivals. Starters vary from Greek staples like octopus to lamb
spring rolls and crab cakes; mains tend to the exotic -
chicken with figs and sesame seeds (€13.50), 12-hour
roasted pork with lime and basil cream (€14) or Roy's black
cod (€30). There's a cheaper, simpler lunch menu, with
main dishes from €7.50-10. Daily Lunch & dinner.

A survivor from the days before Psyrrí was fashionable, and
by far the least expensive option here, with excellent grilled
meats and daily specials, plus great chips. Sun-

Ì Taverna tou Psyrri Eskhýlou 12 T 210 321 4923;
map p.66. Some of the lowest prices and tastiest food in
Psyrrí, so unsurprisingly popular. Starters like stuffed
aubergine for €4 and simple dishes including moussaka
and meatballs for €5.50, but be sure to check out the day's
specials in the kitchen, many of them traditional country
dishes like rabbit stifado or an earthy goat soup (€7). Daily
Lunch & dinner.
Thanasis Mitropóleos 69; map p.66. Reckoned to serve
the best souvláki and yíros in this part of Athens, where
there's plenty of competition. Inexpensive, and always
packed with locals at lunchtime: there's no booking, so
you'll have to fight for a table. Daily 11am to late.
Paradosis store, this consciously old-fashioned kafenío
offers a welcome escape from the crowded Flea Market.
There's also a great view of the rooftops of Pláka on the
slope towards the Acropolis. Open daily 9am-6pm.
Pagoto Manía Aisópou 21, cnr Táki; map p.66. Dozens
of flavours of superb ice cream (€1.50 a scoop) as well as
cakes, coffee and tea. Daily till late.
Ta Servetia tou Psyrri Eskhýlou 3; map p.66. All the
rage with locals for its traditional desserts and sticky cakes,
washed down with tea, coffee or ouzo, according to taste.
Open all day, through to the early hours.

RESTAURANT
Cibus Záppio Gardens T 210 336 9300, W aeglizappiou
.gr; map p.66. Pricey, smart restaurant with a fabulous
setting, allegedly the haunt of the rich and famous and
certainly patronized by politicians and diplomats. “Modern
Mediterranean” food, which here means Greek with French
and Italian influences - starters around €12, mains €15-
30 (eg baby cockerel “Pastitsada” with nutmeg blossom
and goat cheese, €18). It's part of the Aigli complex, which
also houses an all-day café/bar ( Lallabai ) and a famous old
open-air cinema. Daily 7.30pm-1am.
CAFÉS AND BARS
7 Jokers Voulís 7; map p.66. Open all day for coffee,
drinks and snacks, 7 Jokers' quirky, overstuffed decor comes
into its own in the evening as it becomes a funky cocktail
bar, popular with an after-work crowd. All day, through to
the early hours.
Oasis West side of the National Gardens, opposite cnr
of Amalías and Filellínon; map p.66. An unexpected
shady haven just off the main avenue, offering light meals
- sandwiches, pizza, pasta - ice cream and drinks. Daily
9am-sunset.
Zonar's Le Café d'Athenes Voukourestíou 9 at
Panepistimíou; map p.66. Revival of an historic bourgeois
Athenian café on the ground floor of the Attica department
store. Glamorous surroundings, great people-watching and
wonderful cakes and coffee at startlingly high prices.
Mon-Fri 10am-9pm, Sat 10am-7pm.

Arodou Miaoúli 22, cnr Protoyénous T 210 321 6774;
map p.66. Miaoúli, leading up from the metro into Psyrrí,
is packed with bars and crowded with people every
evening. Arodou is right at the heart - a hugely popular
place with plenty of space both outside and in. Drink prices
are very reasonable, and excellent, well-priced meze
(€2.50-6, shared plates from €9) are also available. Daily
till late.
Bougatsadiko tou Psyrri Platía Iróön 1; map p.66.
Open 24 hours, so a good place for late-night munchies -
tirópita and other pies, slices of pizza, drinks and ice cream,
to take away or eat in. 24 hrs.

Every city has to have its Irish pub, but this central Athens
version was a late arrival. However, it was worth waiting for
- it's a really friendly place with great atmosphere, well-kept
Guinness (as well as any other drink you might care to name),
Sky sports and regular live acoustic music. There's also very
good pub-style food - Irish breakfast (€12), sausage and
mash (€9), and steak and Guinness pie (€12), as well as Irish-
style meze! Daily noon-late.

p.66. Tucked away on the upper floor of the Kendro Ellinikis

p.60. A traditional ouzerí, specializing in fish dishes such
as mussels and octopus fritters, that's a venue for long
weekday lunches; mezes typically around €5, and be
sure to check the kitchen for what's on special. Live
