MOUNT FUJI FROM KAWAGUCHI KO
Around Tokyo
Tokyo functions as a giant magnet to visitors from abroad - there's simply so
much to see, eat and do in the capital that many never make it beyond the
city centre, let alone the city limits. However, there's plenty to see within
day-trip range, and many places fully deserve a night or two of their own. If
you make one trip from Tokyo, it should be to the pilgrim town of Nikkō,
famed for its World Heritage-listed, mountain-based shrine complex. Out
west there is the scenic Fuji Fives Lakes area, from which you'll be able to
attack Japan's highest and most majestic peak; and Hakone, a mix of
sulphur-seeping moonscapes, thrilling cable-car rides and hot springs.
Closer to Tokyo is Yokohama, a huge city with plenty to see; and Kamakura,
home to a famed giant Buddha statue.
