with a Japanese flavour, this is built around the Meiji-
period house and traditional garden of novelist Mori Ōgai.
The three wings contain a mix of Western and tatami
rooms; the latter offer more atmosphere, but at doubl e
the price. Rates with or without meals available. ¥13,600

business hotels, with simple, clean rooms and a handy
location right next to Akihabara station. Includes a nice café
that opens for breakfast and turns into a bar at night. ¥17,000

rise above Meiji University, this small 1930s hotel was
formerly the commissioned o cers' quarters during the
Occupation, and then became the haunt of famous writers,
notably Mishima (see p.255). Its rooms are far from Tokyo's
grandest, but there are Art Deco touches and a friendly
welcome - and oxygen and supposedly refreshing negative
ions are pumped around the premises. Note that you
can often lop up to 50 percent off the inflated rack rate.

fancy. The rooms, however, are superbly designed for the
price, thanks to a well-considered recent refurbishment;
throw in free internet access, a convenie nt locatio n and

Modest business cheapie which rises above the competition
thanks to its convenient location on Asakusa's main street,
its English-speaking staff and its small but well-a ppointe d
rooms, all with TV, telephone and internet access. ¥7000

filled lobby, walls peppered with contemporary art and
great views of the Rainbow Bridge and the city across Tokyo
Bay. Rooms are spacious and have small balconies, while
staff are helpful to a t ee - the y even hand out jogging
