bers and 520 rocky steps. The trail, which requires ducking at times, follows an under-
ground waterway called the River Styx. Guided tours (the only way to access the cave)
run at least hourly; they run half-hourly in July and August. Dress warmly, wear good
shoes and be prepared to get dripped on. Due to safety, children less than 42in tall are not
allowed on tours.
A handful of short nature trails surround the area, such as the 0.75-mile Cliff Nature
Trail (offering good views) and the 3.3-mile Big Tree Trail (which loops through old-
growth forest to a huge Douglas fir). Some fine wineries are also found in the area.
Kerbyville Museum MUSEUM

noon-3pm Sun May-Sep, limited hours Apr & Oct, closed Nov-Mar) Surprisingly good museum
for the tiny town of Kerby, 2 miles north of Cave Junction, with fascinating old relics
from Native American baskets to taxidermy and an old View-Master stereoscope (the
idea which started at the Oregon Caves Chateau's dining room). Also a scary surgical kit,
linotype machine and military collection. Tour the nearby historic house too.
Great Cats World Park ZOO
( 541-592-2957; www.greatcatsworldpark.com ; 27919 Redwood Hwy; adult/child 4-12yr $14/10;
10am-6pm Jun-Aug, varies rest of year) For something completely different, check out this
park 1.5 miles south of Cave Junction. This zoo/interactive big cat preserve proves cats
are trainable - even if they're big enough to eat your head.

Holiday Motel MOTEL$

with a handful of simple and clean rooms. Two kitchenettes and a cabin that sleeps up to
six is available ($88). Located in Kerby, 2 miles north of Cave Junction.

ins $80-99) This rustic resort has five comfortable country-style rooms and six cabins
with kitchenettes. It also offers creekside camping and full-hookup RV sites. It's 8 miles
from Cave Junction, on the way to Oregon Caves; reserve in summer.
