are on opposite sides of the river! (There's also North Portland, which oddly
enough is more to the west of NE Portland, but many tourists don't make it this
far.)
Northwest and Southwest Portland include downtown, historic Old Town, the
chic postindustrial Pearl District and exclusive West Hills. Close to downtown but
across the river is the Lloyd District, an extension of downtown that's anchored by
a glass-towered convention center and a big shopping mall.
Northeast and Southeast Portland are mostly tree-lined, late-19th-century resid-
ential neighborhoods, each with its own trendy cluster of shops and restaurants.
Popular commercial streets include N Mississippi Ave, NE Alberta St, SE
Hawthorne Blvd and SE Division St. Sellwood is furthest south and is a pretty
neighborhood with antique stores and yuppies.
West Hills
This area is known for its exclusive homes, windy streets and Forest Park.
Pittock Mansion HISTORIC BUILDING

11am-4pm) This grand and beautiful 1914 mansion was built by pioneer-entrepreneur
Henry Pittock, who revitalized the Oregonian newspaper. Guided tours are available, but
it's worth visiting the (free) grounds simply to have a picnic while taking in the spectacu-
lar views.
International Rose Test Garden GARDENS

7:30am-9pm) These gardens practically gave Portland its 'Rose City' nickname.
They sprawl across 4.5 acres of manicured lawns, fountains and flowerbeds, and on a
clear day you can catch peeks of downtown and Mt Hood. Over 500 rose varieties grow
in the permanent gardens, including many old and rare ones. From April through
September the scent and colors are intoxicating. Call 503-823-3664 for tours.
Japanese Garden GARDENS
