Yakima Valley Museum MUSEUM
( www.yakimavalleymuseum.org ; 2105 Tieton Dr; adult/senior $5/3; 10am-5pm Mon-Sat, closed
Mon Nov-Mar, Children's Underground 1-5pm Tue-Fri, 10am-5pm Sat; ) This highly educational
and entertaining museum is one of the state's best. It tells the story of the region from a
geographic and historical viewpoint, with a strong emphasis on agriculture and the
Yakama Native American heritage. Prize exhibits include a number of horse-drawn con-
veyances and some early motor vehicles, plus a full working mockup of a Depression-era
soda fountain. The Children's Underground does a good job of incorporating Yakima's
human and natural history into a number of hands-on exhibits.
Adjacent to the museum is Franklin Park , a broad lawn planted with evergreens that
features a playground, picnic tables, and - an important feature in sun-baked Yakima - a
swimming pool.
Yakima Greenway PARK
( www.yakimagreenway.org ) A pleasant oasis in an otherwise unremarkable city, the
Greenway is best accessed via Sarg Hubbard Park at I-82 exit 33. It's a 10-mile path for
walkers and cyclists that tracks the fast-flowing Yakima River through a string of parks
and recreation areas. One good stop-off point is the Yakima Area Arboretum
( www.ahtrees.org ) , just east of exit 34, where a collection of more than 2000 species of
trees and shrubs spreads out over 46 acres of landscaped gardens. You can procure a free
walking-tour brochure at the Jewett Interpretive Center (1401 Arboretum Dr;
9am-4pm
Tue-Sat)
.
Treveri Cellars WINE TASTING
(71 Gangl Rd, Wapato; noon-5pm Mon-Thu, 11am-7pm Fri & Sat, noon-4pm Sun) The only
sparkling wines in the valley are made by Treveri, and they're so good they've been
served at the White House. You'll have to drive to Wapato, about 15 miles south of
Yakima, to go to the tasting room and if you do you'll probably end up buying a few
bottles - they start at $14.
