In-Depth Information
east of Yakima off Hwy 24. Five manor rooms are complemented by six guest cottages,
some with double Jacuzzi. The manor, which makes a great alternative to the standard
Yakima hotel chains, also has as a first-class restaurant.
Ledgestone Hotel HOTEL$$$
( 509-453-3151; www.ledgestonehotel.com ; 107 North Fair Ave; ste from $119; ) The
Ledgestone looks like just another roadside chain hotel, but it's not. All its rooms are
one-bedroom suites with minikitchens, lounge areas, bathrooms and separate bedrooms
(with their own flat-screen TVs). There's even a little office nook. Happily, the suites are
sold at standard room prices and there's a fitness room, a laundry service and a few air
miles thrown in for free.
Eating
For a wine region, Yakima is disappointing in the food stakes, though a strong Hispanic
community provides a good excuse to go Mexican.
Tacos Los Primos #2 MEXICAN$
(404 N 4th St; tacos $1.25; lunch) It looks dirty and is parked humbly in front of
Delaney's Lost Sock Laundromat, but this little taco shack churns out some of very
Latino Yakima's best tacos, tortas, sopas and burritos for next to nothing. We highly re-
commend the spicy pork, but go for the tripa (intestines) if you're feeling adventurous.
Essencia Artisan Bakery BAKERY$
(4 N 3rd St; sandwiches from $5; 6am-4pm Mon-Fri, 7am-2pm Sat) Head to this homey
bakery that's always full of locals for creative sandwiches (think ginger roast beef or brie
and chicken), soups, salads, panini, homemade chai and of course the decent selection of
breads and baked goods.
Birchfield Manor Restaurant FUSION$$$
$$$
( 509-452-1960; www.birchfieldmanor.com ; 2018 Birchfield Rd; mains from $20; dinner) The
revered Birchfield is a sublime dining experience offered in an intimate 1910 B&B.
While the accommodation here is considered top end, the food is even better. Reserva-
tions must be made in advance and seating is at set times, but everything from the bread
to the after-dinner chocolates to the knowledgeable service is impeccable. The highlights
are the mains: salmon in puff pastry with chardonnay sauce, steak Diane in a brandy
cream sauce, all expertly paired with local wines (the place has its own cellar). Exquisite!
