CHELAN WINE COUNTRY
In May 2009 Lake Chelan became Washington's 11th certified American Viticultur-
al Area (AVA). There are currently 20 wineries in a region stretching from Chelan to
just beyond Manson (find a winery map at www.lakechelanwinevalley.com ) . A mild
lake effect adds distinctive features to the wine here.
Tsillan Cellars ( www.tsillancellars.com ; 3875 Hwy 97A; noon-5pm Sun-Thu, to 6pm Fri & Sat)
has a stunning Tuscan-inspired chateau on a sloping shore over the lake and is a fa-
vorite spot for weddings and events. The award-winning wines, however, do not
cower under the beautiful scenery - try the reserve syrah, then stay to dine at up-
scale, delicious and romantic Sorrento's Ristorante ( 509-682-5409; mains $16-34;
5pm-late Wed-Fri, noon-late Sat, 10am-late Sun) , the finest restaurant in the region.
Vin du Lac ( www.vindulac.com ; 105 Hwy 150; 11am-7pm) wines are enjoyed in a pretty,
family-friendly yellow tasting room surrounded by flowery patios and overlooking
Lake Chelan. An old orchard now knocks out decent syrah and chardonnay.
There's also an on-site bistro serving lunch, dinner and in-between gourmet snacks
of charcuterie and imported cheeses.
Hard Row to Hoe ( www.hardrow.com ; 300 Ivan Morse Rd, Manson; noon-6pm) gets its
name from its nefarious past as a brothel (which clients got to by row boat). All
tongue in cheek aside, the 'Good in Bed' sparkling sangiovese and pinot noir blend
is good in a glass too.
