Winthrop's poshest restaurant, with its starched white tablecloths and polished wine
glasses, is a notable departure from the saloon-bar staples elsewhere. But the Arrowleaf
works hard to justify its price tag with knowledgeable waiting staff, an excellent river-
side setting, and a menu that contains such un-cowboy-like treats as pistachio-crusted
halibut and maple-brined pork chops.

Twisp
POP 926
The largest of the Methow Valley's three tiny settlements, Twisp is a stomping ground
for fishers, bird-watchers (this is prime bald-eagle country) and appreciators of fine ale -
it's the site of a rip-roaringly good brewpub. Contrary to its one-horse-town image,
Twisp is also the crucible of a budding artists community, though outdoor activities have
long been its raison d'ĂȘtre.
Sights & Activities
Diminutive Twisp supports a small art gallery in the shape of the
Confluence Gallery &
Art Center

; 104 Glover St; 10am-3pm Wed-
Sat)
but, outside of this, the main attractions are outdoors related. Hikes in the
area are popular, with a number of them fanning off the Twisp River Rd that proceeds
west of town along the banks of the Twisp River. Try the 7-mile
Eagle Creek Trail
that
starts from the trailhead on W Buttermilk Creek Rd (11 miles west of Twisp) or strike out
further into the
Lake Chelan-Sawtooth Wilderness Area
.
If you don't mind a few snowmobiles,
cross-country skiing
is easy along the flat
Twisp River Rd. Nearer to downtown, trails start at the Idle-a-While Motel and meander
around Twisp and along the Methow River.
