A privately owned island, known as St Jo to locals, is just across the ship channel from
Port Aransas. This desert island is popular for fishing and beachcombing, although users
are advised to bring over virtually everything they will require, including water. The

BEACH PARKING PERMITS
You can drive your vehicle right onto the sand at many points in Port Aransas and Mustang Island. In fact the
beaches are usually so hard that even a regular car will have no problem - just look to see what others are doing.
At city and county beaches, you'll need a
beach parking permit
($12). These are easily purchased at convenien-
ce stores, supermarkets and at the Port A tourist office (

Activities
There are myriad places offering water adventures and gear for surfing, kiteboarding and
more. Fishing is big business in Port A, and there are dozens of boats offering trips and
private charters. The tourist bureau has listings. Rates vary widely, somewhere between
$50 and $1000 or more, depending on whether you're going to the bay or gulf, the length
of the trip and what exactly you're trying to catch.
