( www.menil.org ; 1515 Sul Ross St; 11am-7pm Wed-Sun) The late local philanthropists John
and Dominique de Menil collected more than 17,000 works of painting, drawing, sculp-
ture, archeological artifacts and more during their lives. The modernist building housing
the main collection exhibits everything from 5,000-year-old antiquities to avant-garde art,
as well as rotating exhibits.
You'll recognize the names in this, one of the world's most impressive private holdings:
Salvidor Dali, Paul Klee, Andy Warhol, René Magritte, Max Ernst.... The museum's ex-
cellent bookstore is actually across the street. Don't forget to also saunter over to the Cy
Twombly Gallery and Rothko Chapel, annexes of the collection.

want it to be. With 14 large paintings by American abstract expressionist Mark Rothko,
it's a perfect place to sit and do something radical: just be.
