In-Depth Information
GAY & LESBIAN SAN ANTONIO
Despite its conservative outlook, there's definitely a vibrant LGBT community here. In addition to June's
PrideFest San Antonio, one of the best times to visit is during Fiesta San Antonio.
» The River City's gay nightlife is concentrated along Main and San Pedro Aves, just north of downtown. Venues
change, but the strips remain the same.
» San Antonio's LGBT Chamber of Commerce ( www.sagaychamber.com ) provides lists of gay-owned and
gay-friendly bars, clubs, businesses and other services.
» There's nothing low-key about the Bonham Exchange ( Click here ); this enormous dance club is dark, loud and
packed on weekends.
» Heat MAP GOOGLE MAP ( 210-227-2600; 1500 N Main Ave; before 11pm free; 4pm-2am Wed-Sat,
to midnight Sun), an 18-and-up club, is frequently open after hours and caters to a late-night crowd that comes for
the huge dancefloor, techno music, theme nights and drag shows.
Entertainment
Although the live music scene isn't as jumping as in Austin, there's still plenty of enter-
tainment in San Antonio. Check the San Antonio Current or Jim Beal's 'Night Lights'
column in the 'Weekender' section of the San Antonio Express-News for upcoming con-
certs. Both publications also have comprehensive listings of art exhibitions and openings,
touring shows, theater, classical music and cinema.
Cover charges vary from $3 for local bands to $25 or more for big-name acts. Tickets
for major sports and performing arts events can be purchased through Ticketmaster (
210-525-1100; www.ticketmaster.com ) , which has more than a dozen city-wide ticket outlets.
Live Music
North of downtown along N St Mary's St, the Strip was once a very vibrant music and bar
scene at the center of the university students' universe. Though not what it once was, it's
still a good place to start your search for live local shows (and the occasional international
act) in San Antonio. There are also a few places by the Riverwalk and on the city's out-
skirts.
There are lots of places to hear Tejano bands and conjunto music, but which place is
hottest tends to shift; check the Spanish-language newspapers for listings.
