Bonner Garden

( 210-733-4222; www.bonnergarden.com ; 145 E Agarita Ave; d $115-165; ) This lovely
Italianate villa dates from 1910 and was built for artist Mary Bonner. Original works by
Texas artists hang on the walls and there's a fireplace with antique tiles. Our hands-down
favorite is Mary Bonner's studio, a detached suite with whitewashed stone walls and
Saltillo tile floors.

getaway in the historic Monte Vista neighborhood, this National Trust property is popular
for weddings and honeymoons. Each of the romantic rooms has its own breakfast table,
bath and telephone. Freshly baked cookies and chocolates appear in the evening, plus
there's a three-course hot breakfast every morning. Peruse the library or simply relax in
the antique-furnished parlor.

4 Greater San Antonio
Rittiman Inn
( 210-657-0808; 6364 IH-35 N; s/d $51/57; ) This independently owned motel on the
north side of town is a bit of a surprise. The outside has some quirky, faux Bavarian
touches and the inside manages to pull off a look that, while it may not have been updated
in ages, doesn't come off as shabby, like they just pulled the plastic slipcovers off right
before you came.
It's, dare we say, kind of cute.

( 800-314-3424, 210-599-4204; www.stayhci.com ; 2383 NE Loop 410; d incl breakfast $65-99;
) Just north of downtown, this anachronistic place feels like it belongs in the Hill Country
more than off an interstate, with cabin-style rooms, ranch-style porches and country-style
furnishings. With its playground and picnic tables, it's great for families.
