In-Depth Information
Austin's handy public-transit system is run by Capital Metro ( Click here ) . Call for direc-
tions to anywhere or stop into the downtown Capital Metro Transit Store (323 Congress Ave;
7:30am-5pm Mon-Fri) for information. Regular city buses - not including the more-expensive
express routes - cost $1 for adults and 50ยข for students and are free for seniors. There are
bicycle racks (where you can hitch your bike for free) on the front of almost all CapMetro
buses, including more than a dozen UT shuttle routes.
TAXI
You'll usually need to call for a cab instead of just flagging one down on the street, except
at the airport, at major hotels, around the state capitol and at major entertainment areas.
The flag drops at $2.50, then it's $2.40 for each additional mile. Larger companies include
Yellow Cab ( 512-452-9999) , Austin Cab ( 512-478-2222) and Roy's Taxi ( 512-482-0000) .
Human-powered bicycle taxis, or pedicabs, are available downtown on 6th St and
around the Warehouse District, usually from about 9pm until after 2am from Wednesday
to Saturday evenings. The drivers, who are typically young students or musicians, work
entirely for tips, so please be generous.
