AROUND AUSTIN
TOP OF CHAPTER
Bastrop
Just 30 miles southeast of Austin lies the quintessential small town of Bastrop. With 131
buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Bastrop has earned the title of
'Most Historic Small Town in Texas,' but it's the redevelopment of the cute historic center
that makes it a fun place to spend a day or two. The happening little burg has first-Friday
art walks from 5pm to 8pm and even has its own app for visitors - proof that 'small town'
doesn't mean 'behind the times.' Check out the Bastrop Visitor Center website
( www.visitbastroptx.com ) to learn more.
In 2011, following the hottest, driest summer on record, a massive wildfire that raged
around Bastrop County became the most destructive Texas fire on record. Fortunately, the
town itself was spared, though a lot of the surrounding countryside was scorched.
