AROUND GRAZ
There are a number of sights within easy distance of Graz that make for a pleasant excur-
sion into the countryside.
TOP OF CHAPTER
Stübing
Located some 15km northeast of Graz and consisting of about 100 Austrian farmstead
buildings, the Österreichisches Freilichtmuseum (Austrian Open-Air Museum; www.freilichtmuseum.at ; adult/
child/family €9/5/26; 9am-5pm Tue-Sun Apr-Oct) in Stübing is ideal for a family outing. The mu-
seum is about a 20-minute walk from the Stübing train station; turn left out of the train sta-
tion and pass over the tracks, then under them before reaching the entrance. Hourly trains
make the journey from Graz (€4, 15 minutes). Pick up a copy of the English-language
guidebook (€2.90) at the entrance.
On the last Sunday in September the Erlebnistag , a special fair with crafts, music and dan-
cing, takes place here.

Bundesgestüt Piber
Piber is home to world-famous Lipizzaner stallion stud farm Bundesgestüt Piber (Piber Stud Farm;
www.piber.com ; Piber 1; tours adult/child €12/7.50; tours 10am, 11am & hourly 1-4pm Apr-Oct, 11am & 2pm Nov-
Mar; ) . Originally the farm was based in Lipica (Slovenia) but was moved here when
Slovenia was annexed after WWI. About 40 to 50 foals are born at the farm every year,
but of these only about five stallions have the right stuff to be sent for training to the Span-
ische Hofreitschule (Spanish Riding School) in Vienna. In summer, you have the choice of
a do-it-yourself tour using a sheet map of the stud, using the free multilingual audioguide
(deposit €10) or taking a fully fledged tour. For information, head to the Tourismusverband

foyer has brochures and an information PC and is open from 6am to 10pm.
