In-Depth Information
Heading south of
Linz
, the city's industrial fringes soon give way to low-rise hills and meadows. Take the
B1 to
St Florian
and explore its majestic Augustinian abbey, a masterpiece of baroque art and the final rest-
ing place of Romantic composer Anton Bruckner. Continue south on minor roads through patchwork fields stud-
ded with
Vierkanthof,
huge square farmhouses with inner courtyards. The rolling countryside brings you to
riverside
Steyr
, the picture-book town that inspired Schubert's
Trout Quintet
and a relaxed place for lunch.
Follow the emerald-tinted Steyr River west along the B122 to
Sierning
, dominated by its Renaissance
Schloss Sierning. From here, the B140 shadows the river south to the pretty church-topped town of
Grün-
burg
, nestled in wooded hills. It's just a 15-minute drive south to
Molln
, the northern gateway to the spec-
tacular limestone peaks, waterfalls and wilderness of
Nationalpark Kalkalpen
. Get information on local
walks at Molln's national park visitor centre. Refreshed by the mountain air, head north, passing Grünburg and
swinging west along a country road to tiny
Adlwang
. Here Gangl farmhouse is a good stop for home-grown
apple juice and
Most
(cider). Five minutes north sits the spa town of
Bad Hall
, fabled for the healing powers
of its iodine-laced waters, in which you can bathe at Mediterrana Therme and inhale (for free) in the sculpture-
dotted park. A short drive west along the B122 leads to
Kremsmünster
, whose opulent Benedictine abbey
harbours an incredible library and observatory. Drive back to Linz via the scenic church-dotted villages lining
the B139.
