Built in 1912, the Votiv
is one of the oldest cinemas in Vienna. It's been extensively updated since then and is
now among the best cinemas in the city. Its three screens feature a mix of Hollywood's
more quirky ventures and art-house films in their original language.
The 11am Tuesday screening is reserved for mothers, fathers and babies, and weekend
afternoons feature special matinées for kids.
LOCAL KNOWLEDGE
SHOPPING STREETS
Kärntner Strasse
The Innere Stadt's main shopping street and a real crowd-puller.
Kohlmarkt
A river of high-end glitz.
Neubau
The city's hottest designers along boutique-clogged streets like Kirchengasse, Lindengasse and
Neubaugasse.
Mariahilfer Strasse
Vienna's mile of high-street style, with big names and even bigger crowds.
Freihausviertel
Lanes packed with home-grown fashion, design and speciality food stores, south of Naschmarkt
around Schleifmühlgasse.
Theobaldgasse
Just off Mariahilfer Strasse, Theobaldgasse's hole-in-the-wall shops purvey everything from
fair-trade fashion to organic food.
Gumpendorferstrasse
Retro fashion, up-market cosmetics, designer lighting - it's all on this funky 6th-district
street.
Josefstädter Strasse
An old-fashioned shopping street filled with idiosyncratic shops selling anything from
Alt-
waren
(old wares) to gemstones.
Shopping
Vienna is one place where the glitz and glamour of shops selling high-end brands stand in
stark contrast to some weird and idiosyncratic local stores. Specialities include porcelain,
ceramics, handmade dolls, wrought-iron work and leather goods, and there are many
shops selling
Briefmarken
(stamps),
Münze
(coins) and
Altwaren
(secondhand odds and
ends).
