plaza, the original site of Fort Pueblo (an American fort established in 1842 and held until
1854, when a Ute and Apache raid on Christmas Day caused the fort to be abandoned),
this airy, modern museum with a stunning interior houses treasures from the Pueblo past.
Exhibits include an old cannon, a family teepee and a cut from a massive old tree that
once stood over present-day Union Ave and was ominously called the hanging tree.
Saturday is family day, when kids under 12 are granted free admission.
Rosemount Museum

Pueblo's premier historic attraction is this three-story, 37-room Victorian mansion, con-
structed in 1893 of pink rhyolite stone. It contains elaborate stained glass and elegant, ori-
ginal furnishings. The top floor features an Egyptian mummy and other assorted booty
from philanthropist Andrew McClelland's global travels during the early 20th century.

Nature & Raptor Center
of Pueblo

Raptor Center 11am-4pm Tue-Sun; ) Riverside trails, reptile displays, picnic and playground
areas and a raptor center bring people beneath the cottonwoods on the Arkansas River.
The raptor program began in 1981 to assist the Department of Wildlife in rehabilitating in-
jured birds of prey. The turnoff for Nature Center Rd is 3 miles west of downtown, north
of the Pueblo Ave Bridge.

Sangre de Cristo Art Center

three brick buildings, housing seven galleries that feature both fine and regional historical
arts and crafts, this is more than just Pueblo's art museum. It's also an arts center with
more than 100 music, dance and fine-arts classes each quarter. Admission also includes
entrance to the Buell Children's Museum.
