plaques at Big Bend, 41 miles west of the US 287-Hwy 14 junction.
After Hwy 14 branches away from the river it ascends Cameron Pass (10,276ft), where
the stunning 12,485ft Nohku Crags form the northernmost peaks of the Never Summer
Range.
Once you're over Cameron Pass, you enter State Forest State Park ( 303-470-1144;
www.parks.state.co.us ; Hwy 12, Mile 56; day pass $7, camping $16-20) . This lost piece of Colorado back-
country has mountains and alpine lakes galore, a cool backcountry huts system and even
some sand dunes up north. Never Summer Nordic ( 970-723-4070; www.neversummernordic.com ; 247
County Rd 41, Walden; yurt $60-120) maintains several yurts (canvas-walled portable structures
equipped with wood-burning stoves, beds and kitchens) and one cabin in the park. It's
open during the summer and winter.
