RED FEATHER LAKES
Red Feather Lakes is a remote, scrappy little town in the pine-dotted hills around the Lone
Pine Creek drainage, about 50 miles northwest of Fort Collins. It's far more rustic than oth-
er mountain areas and the scenery is less dramatic, but the seclusion can more than make
up for it. From Fort Collins take US 287 north for 21 miles, then turn left (west) at Liver-
more on Larimer County Rd 74E for 24 miles to Red Feather Lakes Ranger Station (
970-881-2937; 274 Dowdy Lake Rd;
9am-5pm Mon-Fri Memorial Day-Labor Day) , operated by the
Roosevelt National Forest.
Nordic ski trails for all abilities offer one-hour to full-day loops at Beaver Meadows Resort

) , which is open daily year-round.
Fishing and lakeside USFS campsites are available at Dowdy Lake Campground ( reservations
through Reserve America 877-444-6777; www.recreation.gov ; Dowdy Lake Rd; campsites $15; May-Sep; ) and
West Lake Campground ( reservations through Reserve America 877-444-6777; www.recreation.gov ; off County
Rd 74E; campsites $15; May-Sep; ) . Both campgrounds are overseen by the Canyon Lakes
Ranger District. About 9 miles west along 74E/Deadman Rd, there are sites at the North Fork
Poudre Campground (
