local area, Estes Park's central library is a good resource for travelers researching on the
go.

ated post office with a fully staffed service desk.
USFS Estes Park Visitors Center ( 970-586-3440; 161 2nd St) This center sells books and maps for
the Arapaho and Roosevelt National Forests and has camping and trail information for
hikers and mountain bikers. Camping permits for the heavily used Indian Peaks Wilder-
ness Area, south of Rocky Mountain National Park, are required from June to September
15 and cost $5 per person.
Getting There & Away
Estes Park is 34 miles west of Loveland via US 34, which you can access from I-25 exit
257. Many visitors also come up by way of Boulder along US 36, passing through Lyons.
Both are spectacular drives through rugged foothills, red rock formations and lush forest.
A slower but more scenic route is the spectacular Peak to Peak Hwy.
Getting Around
Considering the traffic, getting around Estes Park's compact downtown is easiest on foot.
Estes Park has started a free shuttle service in the summer along the town's main arteries.
The routes seem to change every year, but the service operates daily from about July to
August, and then weekends only through September. If you're traveling into Rocky
Mountain National Park, there is a free 'Hiker Shuttle,' which leaves from the Estes Park
Visitors Center, making stops at Beaver Meadows Visitor Center and the park's Park &
Ride lot, where you can transfer to other national park shuttles.
TO & FROM THE AIRPORT
Estes Park Shuttle ( 970-586-5151; www.estesparkshuttle.com ) This shuttle service connects Den-
ver's airport to Estes Park about four times a day. The trip takes two hours.
BICYCLE
Cycling is a great way to get around the area, though few visitors seem to use this mode of
transport (of course the altitude does make for some huffing and puffing). In summer, bike
