Visiting the Museum: Enterthroughthegapbetweenthesmallchurchandthebigmon-
astery. Just inside the door (before the ticket-seller), a century-old pharmacy still serves
residents. Notice the antique jars, advertisements (including one of the first known aspirin
ads), and other vintage pharmacist gear. By keeping this open, the monastery maintains one
of the world's oldest continually operating pharmacies.
Explore the peaceful, sun-dappled cloister. Examine the capitals at the tops of the 60
Romanesque-Gothic double pillars. Each one is different. Notice that some parts of the
portals inside the courtyard are made with a lighter-colored stone—these had to be repaired
after being hit during the 1991-1992 siege. The damaged 19th-century frescoes along the
tops of the walls depict the life of St. Francis, who supposedly visited Dubrovnik in the
early 13th century. If you look closely, in a few panels you may see two layers of (different)
scenes; beneath the 19th-century frescoes, restorers have found even more precious frag-
ments of some early 18th-century paintings; where possible, these are also being resurrec-
ted.
