In-Depth Information
The church, like most churches in this city, was built following the 1667 earthquake and
fire. And, while we've heard plenty on this walk about Dubrovnik's rivalry with Venice,
there's no denying that the Venetians were some of Europe's top cultural trendsetters at that
time. So Dubrovnik invited a Venetian architect to design the church dedicated to their fa-
vorite saint. That's why St. Blaise's looks like it would be right at home reflected in a Vene-
tian canal...right down to its bulbous dome, which seems to have been transplanted here
from the top of St. Mark's.
• Your tour is finished. From here, you've got plenty of sightseeing options (all described
next, under “Sights in Dubrovnik”). As you face the Bell Tower, you can go up the street to
the right to reach the Rector's Palace and cathedral; you can walk straight ahead through
the gate to reach the Old Port; or you can head through the gate and jog left to find the
Dominican Monastery Museum. Even more sights—including an old synagogue, an Ortho-
dox church, a modern exhibit of war photography, and the medieval granary—are in the
steep streets between the Stradun and the walls.
