Best Views: Walking the Old Town walls late in the day, when the city is bathed in rich
light, is a treat. The cable car up to Mount Sr đ provides bird's-eye panoramas over the
entireregion,fromthehighestvantagepointwithoutwings.The Fort of St. Lawrence,
perched above the Pile neighborhood cove, has great views over the Old Town. The
panoramic cruises that loop around the Old Town are another fine choice. A stroll up
the road east of the city walls offers nice views back on the Old Town (best light early
in the day). Better yet, if you have a car, head south of the city in the morning for gor-
geously lit Old Town views over your right shoulder; various turn-offs along this road
are ideal photo stops. The best one, known locally simply as “panorama point,” is
where the road leading up and out of Dubrovnik meets the main road that passes above
the town (look for the pull-out on the right, usually crowded with tour buses). Even if
you're heading north, in good weather it's worth a quick detour south for this view.
Game of Thrones in Dubrovnik
Fans of the HBO television series Game of Thrones may feel the tingle of déjà vu
during their visit to Dubrovnik. Over the last few years, part of the series has been
filmed here, generally between mid-August and mid-September. Many locals have
beenextras,andthey'vebecomeaccustomed toseeingPeterDinklagestrollingdown
the Stradun in full costume on his way to the set, or spotting King Joffrey at the next
table when dining at their favorite konoba.
In the show, Dubrovnik often stands in for King's Landing, while the island of
Lokrum was the site of the Qarth garden party. The Fort of St. Lawrence (filmed in
various battle scenes) looks over a pleasant cove that becomes Blackwater Bay for
the show's purposes. Other filming locations have included Trsteno Arboretum, the
rock quarry, and Gradac park (where the royal wedding took place). Filming has also
taken place in other parts of Croatia, most notably the fortified town of Ston and the
cityofSplit.Ofcourse,thefantasy-worldlocations ontheshowdon'tmatchthereal-
world locations exactly; digital effects are often added to dress things up.
GoT aficionados may want to take a guided tour of filming locations; check to see
if a local company offers one, or book through the international tour company, Viat-
or.com.
